I just snorted awake after falling asleep during the pool event. Now that’s done (and I can file it under ‘things I should just watch the highlights reel of’) it’s time to go to the pool’s almost polar opposite location. Portugal’s Supertubos is a heart thumping, ball tearing, ear-drum shuddering wave that’s about as predictable as Donald Trump on whipper. Who knows what’s going to happen?! You aren’t getting two of the same waves in a heat. Chances are you might not even get two waves. It’s a fickle beast that’s pickled the likes of even Kelly Slater at times. A gladiatorial arena that can serve up career slaying injuries, just as well as cute ramps and cheeky shade lamps. Are you not entertained?!
Those who are a great read of the ocean definitely have an advantage. Those who can shine in a variety of conditions often fair well too. With all of that swirling like an Atlantic tidal current, who do you pick to improve your chances at winning fantasy surfer? Here are your best fantasy surfer picks Portugal 2025.
WOMENSDEFINITES
Tati Dub Dub
Tatiana Weston-Webb has the best record of any female surfer at this event in recent memory. And, she’s in tier C with the plebs. With a 3rd last year, a 3rd the year before and a 1st in 2022, you’d have to have sardines in your ears to not have her in your team. There’s even an argument for powering her up. She hasn’t had the best start to the year though, so you might want to save your bonus points for the current baller of ballers (more on her in a sec). Regardless, if you like good bets, click Tati’s icon and get ready to watch the points roll in.
Caity Simmers
Pretty much the only surfer that was watchable in Abu Dhabi time and time again was the Red Baronette Caity Simmers. She was ducking, weaving, slicing and dicing outside the lines every single time. Pair that up with her insane form at Pipe and it’s hard to not see her defending her world title this year. She’s won this event before, loves a heavy sand pit and has a zillion aura points glowing around her at the moment. The baller of ballers is looking like a future GOAT right now. Like Dane Reynolds if Dane actually knew how to surf a heat. Double her up and let it ride for the entire season.
DARK HORSE:
Someone in Tier B
The seeding is throwing spanners at us this event. I’d say someone like Joanne Defay is a dark horse in tier C (she’s defending event champ after all). However, she just announced that she’s pregnant and is taking a break from the tour. While she still appears to be in the draw, it’s clear her mind is elsewhere right now. There’s also the fact you’ve already taken my advice and locked Tati into your team, right? So, who’s in Tier B? Erin Brooks is an option who has failed to live up to expectation so far, but could go all the way. Gabriela Bryan suits this type of wave and has a coach who knows the location, but doesn’t have great history. I’m thinking a veteran could step up here for an out of the box win. Lakey fits that bill and has wow’d at Supertubos before. She’s my roughie pick. Let’s go Lakey!
AVOID
Yolanda Hopkins
There’s a case to be made to actually put Yolanda in your team. She broke Tiago’s curse in 2023 to hit quarter finals as a local wildcard, beating Carissa Moore in the process. She’s surfing better than ever. Then you look at the heat draw and see who she’ll be up against in rnd 1 and likely rnd 3 – Caity Simmers. I just can’t fathom her beating the Raspberry Beret in anything other than maybe a staring contest. Never bet against good form.
MENSDEFINITES
Griffin Colapinto
Two wins in the last three years. Need I say more? Probably not, but I need to keep up my word count to match the other slots. So, here you go. Griffin. Griffin. Griffin. Griffin. Griffin. Griffin. Griffin. Griffin. Griffin. Griffin. Griffin. Griffin. Griffin. Griffin. Griffin. Griffin. Griffin. Griffin. Griffin. Griffin. Griffin. Griffin. Griffin. Griffin. Griffin. Griffin. Griffin. Griffin. Griffin. Griffin. Griffin. Griffin. Griffin. Griffin. Griffin. Griffin. Griffin. Griffin. Griffin. Griffin. Griffin. Griffin. Griffin. Griffin. Griffin. Griffin. Griffin. Griffin. Griffin. Griffin. Griffin. Powered.
Italo Ferreira
Italo’s squat regime is finally starting to pay dividends. He’s hit peak glute strength and is now working on his triceps by lifting up heavy trophies again. This guy would likely give up the Yellow Jersey about the same time as he stops putting Red Bull on his breakfast cereal. His history in Portugal is excellent. His current form is impeccable. He’s flexing his abs as you read this, practicing what it feels like to shit yourself to victory in psycho waves by giving it all you have. Tier A gold.
DARK HORSE
Crosby Colapinto
This is where I choose someone less than obvious to put in your team. If you’re looking for other predictable names, think Jack Robbo, Ethan Ewing and other past finalists. If you’re wanting a sneaky ninja that’s about to smoke bomb out of nowhere to slice off heads, hand the Croz the invisibility gi. Fresh off of injury, he’ll be psyched to start climbing up the cut to be the guy holding all of the swords at the end. With a semi here last year, it’s the perfect event to start that climb. Slide him in and wait for glory.
AVOID
Deivid Silva
Out of three starts at this event, Deivid Silva has yet to make it past the round of 32 in Portugal. If by some twist of fate, he avoids elimination straight up, history will tell you he won’t make the next round. Considering he’s not at career best form either and it’s hard to count him in this race. Plennnnnty more talent cruising the tier B rock pool like octopi waiting to be sucked up. Look at other Brazilians to pick up the slack – Joao, Filipe and Yago are all much better options.
That’s the latest and greatest. Remember, set your picks now and then shuffle after round 1 to avoid any donut scores. Lock and load. It’s time for chocolatey barrel eclairs.
And for anyone questioning our talents, here’s Lincoln perfect team below…
