THE SUIT

O’Neill, are, without a doubt, one of the top wetsuit brands in the world. Since the beginning, they’ve built their name on well-constructed, warm, reliable suits that don’t make you feel like you’re wearing a straight jacket.

For this test, we got our hands on the O’Neill HyperX 3/2mm Stitchless Steamer. Built heavily around their Stitchless Seam Technology (SST) and Recycled TB3X neoprene, the goal here is to minimise water entry while maximising thermal efficiency and stretch.

WHAT IT’S GOOD FOR

The HyperX is for the surfer who wants that legendary O’Neill reliability and warmth without blowing the absolute top off their budget. It’s ideal for those who value supreme seam integrity, while still moving looser than a dolphin on disco night. If you want a dependable steamer that feels great and runs hot, this is right in the crosshairs.

THE IMPORTANT STUFF

FIT & COMFORT

These guys have their fits dialled in to a tee. It slips on snug as a glove without squeezing you tight like an overbearing lover. The FUZE chest zip is a great entry system, allowing easy in and out with a genuinely good seal. On your first try in the change room, there is a seam on the back of the knee that feels a little tight, but that completely disappeared after 2-3 surfs once it loosened up. Just know before you buy that it breaks in perfectly.

PERFORMANCE

O’Neill rank this at top flexibility. Mostly, we agree, but with one caveat. It’s as flexible as a wetsuit with their liquid tape can be. O’neill tends to choose a thicker liquid tape which noticeably reduces flex compared with a normal GBS seam (or say a thinner liquid tape like Billabong use). There’s only so much it can stretch, which makes for a restriction point beyond what the incredible TB3X rubber actually allows. This is always the trade-off for thicker liquid tape: you’re sacrificing a flex for a much longer seam life, keeping the flush out. For many, that’s a trade they’re willing to make, since this is still very flexible, just not ‘I’m surfing nude’ flexible.

WARMTH

This was the biggest surprise of our test. The HyperX is a baker’s oven, even when it doesn’t have a heavy, full thermal-fuzz lining. The integrity of the stitchless seams combined with the premium O’Neill rubber makes for excellent, trapped-heat insulation. If you’re wanting a proper furnace, you can step up into the O’neill HyperFire or similar, but this will keep most people toasty as cinnamon roll on Sunday.

VALUE

Another area where this suit absolutely excels. Retailing at $599.99 AUD, it’ll leave you with spare change compared to other big brands’ top-tier suits that can push up around the $800 mark. Where inflation has crept into everywhere else, O’Neill have managed to hold their ground. We’ll cheers to that. It’s basically the price of filling up an SUVs tank of gas these days. Plus, the O’Neill wetsuit warranty = 12 months from date of original purchase

VERDICT

The O’Neill HyperX 3/2mm is a stellar performer that punches well above its price tag. It combines O’Neill’s storied reputation for durability with genuinely impressive tech, most notably the Stitchless Seams and TB3X rubber. While the heavy-duty seams mean you sacrifice a marginal percentage of absolute stretch, the resulting baker’s-oven warmth and longevity make it a good trade-off. It’s a highly dependable suit that’s comfortable, reliably hot, and sensibly priced.
