Julian Wilson and The Rail Project

Brand: Red Bull and Julian Wilson
Location: Newcastle and URBN SURF
Key Features:
Riding a rail in the ocean and in a pool
Photographer: Red Bull

The concept?
Surfing a rail in the water.

This is nuts, found it while scrolling away on Apple News then again on the Red Bull site. We’ve seen attempts at surfing a rail several times before in surfing – Chris Cote, Ozzy Wright, etc have all tried and got lit up trying it – but this one, in a pool, with Julian Wilson is a make and it’s damn impressive.

The board?
Wilson talked to his shaper, Jason Stevenson from JS Industries, about the and the pair agreed that due to its minimal weight and maximum strength, carbon fibre was required for both the custom surfboards and custom-made rail needed to attempt the project.

The result?
As time ticked away, he launched a string of successful attempts and was left grinning from ear-to-ear when he finally found himself sessioning a rail like he was back at the Coolum skatepark of his youth – just with 5’10” of fibreglass underfoot.

You can read the entire story, written by Mr Binns, over at the Red Bull site.
